The Soft and Polymeric Matter group ( to the Instituto de Estructura de la Materia, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Madrid, Spain.

The goal of our group is to advance in the understanding of  the physics involved in the key points of Soft Matter in order to control nanostructuration in three (bulk) , two (surfaces), in one (nanotubes) and zero (nanoparticles) dimensions of Soft Materials and their applications in several fields like nano- and opto-electronics, environment responsive nanomaterials and life sciences.

There are three key aspects of Soft Matter in which we are contributing:

1. Structure: The relevance of length scales between those defined by the atomic and the macroscopic scale.

2.  Dynamics: The importance of molecular fluctuations and Brownian motion produce new kinds of organized motion in Soft Matter. In complex fluids the thermal fluctuations, which dominate the fluid state, coexist with the stringent constraints impose by the molecular interactions, characteristic of the solid state. The dynamics of a complex fluid is not exclusively related to the molecular motions but also to the dynamics of larger macromolecular groups.

3.  Structure-Dynamics relationship: A central aspect of Soft Matter is self-organization/nanostructuring characterized by the spontaneous creation of regular hierarchical structures  at different length scales that control the dynamics of the system .

Project description:

The project proposed  "Investigation of micro and nano structured polymeric, inorganic and hybrid surfaces  and their interactions: From the physical basis to the applications"  will be directly related to advanced materials, nanotechnology and nanoelectronics which are considered key enabling technologies in line with those identified in Horizon 2020 program. The applicant will join the Soft and Polymeric Condensed Matter Physics, SOFTMATPOL, IEM-CSIC which is specialized in the physics of polymer materials and in the preparation and characterization of polymer nanostructures. The overall objective of the project is to advance in the basic understanding of the physico-chemical bases of confinement produced by different advanced processing techniques involved in the nanotechnology of polymer materials, nanocomposites and hybrid systems and in exploiting the peculiarities of the nanostructure/medium interaction in specific applications involving interaction with a gas/fluid (gas sensors and supercapacitors), with an electric field (ferroelectric memories, functional electrodes) or with radiation (photodetectors, phototransductors, photovoltaic heterostructures). The techniques to be involved in the project include X-ray Scattering methods including Small and Wide angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS), both in transmission and at grazing incidence(GIX) and using conventional and synchrotron radiation. In addition  Atomic Force Microscopy techniques including Quantitative Mechanical Analysis(QNM), Conductive-AFM (C_AFM) and Piezoelectric_AFM (PFM) will be applied. It is expected that the progress of the project will have an impact in the development of advanced devices of potential industrial interest for companies from different sectors.
