Brief description of the institution:

The University of Murcia (UMU) is a public and wide university in the south-east of Spain. Founded in 1915, it comprises 330 Research Groups and 4 University Institutes of Research are either created or in the process of constitution: Ageing, Optics and Nanophysics, Water and Environment Institute and Information and Communication Applied Technologies. The University of Murcia has more than 33.000 students, with a teaching staff of 2.500 professors spread over 5 campuses. It offers 51 degrees, 70 master’s degrees and 53 doctorates. UMU has extensive experience in hosting international projects and promoting research excellence in a learning environment

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

The Parallel Computer Architecture Research Group (GACOP) of the University of Murcia began in 1995, being now one of the main pillars of the Faculty of Computer Science. Currently, the group consists of 4 PhDs and around 7 Ph.D. students and a varying number of master and visiting students.

The research of our group has been always centered around the topic of Supercomputing, with greater emphasis in the following lines: (1990 - until now) Interconnection networks, (2000 - ) Computer architecture on Multiprocessor on chip (CMPs), (2008 - ) Code modernization for bio-inspired algorithms, and (2015 - ) High Performance Computing for Deep Neural Networks.

The GACOP group offers a stimulating environment to perform top quality science on parallel computer architecture. The philosophy of the group is to contribute high-quality scientific research and be in permanent contact with national groups whose topics are similar to ours, as well as with some of the best-known European and North-American groups. As a result of this strategy, a significant percentage of the produced publications have emerged through collaborations with other groups. These works have been published in prestigious international journals (JCR indexed) and high-impact international conferences.

The prospective postdoc would be expected to co-supervise Ph.D. students on related projects to his proposal.

Project description:

We are interested in a wide range of research topics on high-performance computing for deep learning. The deep-neural-network branch of ML is a transformational technology that, in the last five years, has started revolutions in several fields.

We are seeking candidates with a strong expertise in parallel computer architecture. We also encourage candidates with a background in machine learning, who are interested to design the computing systems required to deliver on the potential of DL.

This project will focus on applying deep learning to improve the objectivity and efficiency of histopathology slide analysis. As a case study, we will test prostate cancer identification in biopsy specimens. The project will be developed in collaboration with the Reina Sofía Hospital in Murcia.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a related subject, and preferably have published high-impact journals and at the top computer architecture and/or machine learning conferences.

Candidates are encouraged to contact us ( informally before submitting.

Documents to be submitted:

- A Curriculum Vitae- Summary presentation of the candidate's research proposal and expertise that he/she would bring to theinstitution

- A motivation letter (1 page)

- Optional: recommendation letters

Deadline: 10 July 2018, 17:00h (Brussels time)
