Brief description of the institution:

The University of Jaén (UJA) is an EHEA medium-sized Spanish public university (some 16000 students and almost 1000 lecturers) that was established in 1993 and is organized into 6 main Schools/Faculties (Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Work, Faculty of Human Sciences, Faculty of Experimental Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences and two Schools of Engineering). In addition to its 124 research groups, the University of Jaén is proud of its 4 Advanced Research Centers (Earth Sciences, Energy and Environmental Sciences, Olive Oil Research and Development, and Computational Sciences) and of its Institute on Iberian Archaeology Research. Moreover, UJA is integrated into a university network recognized as Campus of International Excellence in the fields of Agrifood (CEIA3), Climate Change (CamBio) and Historical Heritage (PatrimoniUN10).

UJA permanently welcomes new foreign research proposals as part of a conscious effort to increase its international profile and widen both its knowledge and its horizons.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

The research group is a consolidated team, focussed in the study of carbonate platforms and their coeval pelagic successions, with the aim to unravel the main factors controlling sedimentation in both sedimentary domains. Specific research lines within the described context include sequence stratigraphy, geochemistry (elements, isotopes and biomarkers), sedimentology, biostratigraphy (nanofossils, planktonic and benthonic foraminifers, rudists, ammonites), and basin analysis. Although the main body of the team is in the Jaén University, it holds a range of international collaborations, including the ETH (Zurich), Bristol, Open and Kingston universities (UK), and UNAM (Mexico).

The University of Jaén has most of the necessary equipment to develop the project, mostly hosted in the central research services

Project description:

Jurassic and Cretaceous marine successions of the Betic Cordillera (SE Spain) represent a rich sedimentary record of major processes and events, related to tectonic, eustatic and environmental changes. The analysis of the interplay between, tectonic, eustatic, environmental and biotic changes is a challenging research goal, that requires a broad multidisciplinary approach. Present project focussed on major events of global scale, as Oceanic Anoxic Events and carbonate platform drownings, and their relation to development of carbonate platforms in extensional rift basins. The final goal is to characterize and correlate major events and sedimentary processes, in order to establish their cause-effect relationships. The models developed from these studies will aid to the interpretation of the sedimentary record and to the better understanding of the present day global change.
