Brief description of the institution:

Mecwins was founded in 2008 by Dr. Javier Tamayo and Dr. Montserrat Calleja, Bionanomechanics group leaders from the Institute of Microelectronics of Madrid (IMM – CSIC). Since then, we have been developing innovative technology for nanomechanical sensing. The technology was the groundwork for the technical improvements that led us to our ultrasensitive detection system.
Our multidisciplinary team is continuously working in close cooperation with universities and research institutes developing innovative products.
Mecwins main objective is to bring to the market its technology as a reference technique for medical testing through ultrasensitive detection of protein biomarkers. Mecwins employees are proud to be part of this ambitious and wonderful project to improve the quality of healthcare of those sections of the population particularly at risk.
Mecwins team, composed of physicists, mathematicians, chemists, biologists and engineers, benefits from direct know-how through the relocation of scientists and executives with international experience.

Mecwins was founded in 2008 by Dr. Javier Tamayo and Dr. Montserrat Calleja, Bionanomechanics group leaders from the Institute of Microelectronics of Madrid (IMM–CSIC) in Spain. Dr. Oscar Ahumada, general manager of Mecwins from the very beginning, manages the company with the goal of developing Nanotechnological solutions for unmet needs in medical diagnosis, based on ultra-sensitive technology for biomarker detection. Mecwins' team, composed of physicists, mathematicians, chemists, biologists and engineers, benefits from direct know-how through the relocation of scientists and executives with international experience. This is a venture capital backed company.

Mecwins innovative technology combines Nanomechanical sensing and Plasmonic emission with a sandwich immunoassay, providing a solution for those diagnostic situations where ultra-sensitive detection is needed. Mecwins technology is based on the company’s laboratory-proven hybrid mechano-optical biosensing technology, which enables ultra-sensitive, multiplexed detection of disease biomarkers.

The hybrid technology is particularly suitable for the development of a portable detection device appropriate for use by medical professionals. This innovative technology allows easy and fast detection of protein biomarkers at concentrations as low as sub-femtogram per milliliter, which is a million times lower than that achieved in current clinical practice (0.1 ng/mL).

Project description:

The successful candidate will partner closely with other members of the Bioscience and Engineering departments.

Primary activities and responsibilities:

  • Working with a multidisciplinary team and contributing to candidate biomarker identification.
  • Experimental evaluation and validation of different GNPs (Gold Nanoparticles), study of the spectral information of the particles and its applications in developing multiplexing capabilities of the technology.
  • Contribute in the fabrication protocol, proving different examples of immunoassay fabrication route, antibody immobilization on nanoparticles, surface chemistry and proteomics.
  • Contribute in the optimization and characterization of surface chemistry for biological systems.
  • Keeping abreast of recent developments in the field of ultrasensitive immunoassays and bringing new methods to the team, providing technical leadership and mentorship to the reagent and assay development team.
  • Contribute innovative and creative solutions that support immunoassays across programs in multiple diagnostic and therapeutic areas as well as integrating biological reagents with medical devices.
  • Evaluation and review of experimental data, implementation of quality controls, preparation and presentation of associated documents for the Bioscience team, external partners, and customers.
  • Initiate and maintain collaborations with academic and industry scientists to test and utilize our products, and to develop new applications for our products.

Also required experience on surface chemistry, knowledge and hands on experience with antibody immovilization on nanoparticles and understand the requirements for manufacturable devices and associated processes.
