Brief description of the institution:

Mecwins was founded in 2008 by Dr. Javier Tamayo and Dr. Montserrat Calleja, Bionanomechanics group leaders from the Institute of Microelectronics of Madrid (IMM – CSIC). Since then, we have been developing innovative technology for nanomechanical sensing. The technology was the groundwork for the technical improvements that led us to our ultrasensitive detection system.
Our multidisciplinary team is continuously working in close cooperation with universities and research institutes developing innovative products.
Mecwins main objective is to bring to the market its technology as a reference technique for medical testing through ultrasensitive detection of protein biomarkers. Mecwins employees are proud to be part of this ambitious and wonderful project to improve the quality of healthcare of those sections of the population particularly at risk.
Mecwins team, composed of physicists, mathematicians, chemists, biologists and engineers, benefits from direct know-how through the relocation of scientists and executives with international experience.

Project description:

The project faced by MECWINS targets the research on a new technology of ultrasensitive detection of a potential viral load in blood donations, reducing the serological window as much as possible, and thereby guaranteeing the safety of blood stored in blood banks.

Blood transfusion is a medical therapy aimed to save lives, which implies that the product safety standards have to be extremely high. The serological window of viral diseases (such as infections with HIV or hepatitis) prevents their detection during the first period after an infection (approximately the first three weeks), due to the very low concentration of agents in the blood. To overcome this limitation, a new detection system with very high sensitivity will be defined, to exceed the results obtained with the current methods, while at the same time being able to be used in daily clinical routine. Also, this new system will be able to detect and distinguish several diseases simultaneously thanks to the application of a multiplexing technique.

The project presents a highly specific and ultrasensitive protein detection technology that will allow direct detection of the virus in the blood, without waiting for the corresponding antibodies to develop. To achieve this goal, the work will be based on two principal elements:

  • · A new optical reading technology based on the emission from detection nanoparticles, which will allow a sensitivity of up to 1 million times better than in current techniques.
  • · Biological kits for the simultaneous detection of different diseases.
