Brief description of the institution:

Fundació Parc Taulí (FPT) is an entity created in order to promote and manage the biomedical teaching, training, and research by healthcare professionals from the Corporació Sanitària Parc Taulí (CSPT). As a strategic objective, FPT provides researchers with facilities for basic research, assistance in search of funds for scientific and medical research, as well as valorizes the technology and research results generated by the CSPT professionals and transfers them to the society by transforming the medical scientific findings into useful products. FPT-CSPT has been recognized as a University Institute affiliated to the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and has become a reference in Spain for Health Innovation and transference.
Since its inception, one of the key aims of the Foundation has been to reinforce biomedical teaching and training, both for established professionals and those new to the field. For this reason, the FPT carries out numerous activities such as continuing education, undergraduate and postgraduate courses, grant assignment, and the organization of numerous scientific acts. In relation to the HRS4r quality seal, FPT presented its endorsement letter in 2014 and throughout 2017 it has worked on preparing the documentation to obtain the seal.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

The research group "Cognitive Neurosciences & Affective Disorders (CNAD)” of the I3PT is a research group that gathers both postdoctoral and clinical researchers from the Department of Mental Health at the University Hospital of Parc Taulí (IP: Narcís Cardoner; orcid). This group has been recognized as a consolidated research group (2017 SGR 1292) accredited by the AGAUR (Agency for the Management of University Research Grants of the Generalitat de Catalunya). The main objective of our group is the characterization of affective disorders, using as a research framework the analysis of response to therapeutic strategies. The analysis and validation of the therapeutic interventions allows to deepen the knowledge of the aetiology of the affective disorders and, at the same time fosters the development of new markers that can be used as predictors of response or trait markers. For this purpose, we use methods derived from clinical research and neurosciences, including, but not limited to, neuropsychology, neuroimaging or, more recently, genetics or proteomics.

Project description:

Our current project aims to characterize the therapeutic response of treatment-resistant depression (TRD) using electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) as main study framework. Our goal is to explore this topic with different approaches. First, in collaboration with research groups at the Black Dog Institute (Sydney) and Harvard University (Boston) investigate the different neural correlates of therapeutic response to ECT and pharmacotherapy in TDR using neuroimaging and neuropsychology methods. Second apply a proteomic approach to study the response to both treatment strategies regarding to the potential neuroinflammatory, neurotrophic and neurovascular response. Finally, in collaboration with a group of the Neurosciences Institute of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), we aim to reproduce this study in a genetic rat model of depression.
