Brief description of the institution:

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

WiComTec is a research group of the Department of Signal Theory and Communications at the UPC - BarcelonaTech  since 2008. Its main activity is focused on the area of radio communications, more specifically on wireless networks, mobile communications and digital broadcasting systems. Our research ranges from the physical layer analysis to investigations at the system level and improvement of new standards.

WiComTec has been recognized as an official and consolidated research group by the regional Catalan government. It is currently composed of 6 permanent professors, 1 post-doc and several Ph.D students. Some of its members have an experience of more than 20 years in the area of Radiocommunication Systems. The group facilities are currently located at UPC’s Baix Llobregat campus, in the city of Castelldefels, in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

Since its creation, the members of WiComTec have published >80 papers in scientific journals with 12 awards for best papers or demos, >25 book chapters, edited 3 books, advised 12 Ph.D thesis. Their work has received 12 awards and they have participated in a total of 26 competitive projects (http://futur.upc.edu/wicomtec)

WiComTec is commited to research activities in close contact with industry to promote the transfer of results into practice. For this reason we collaborate in agreements with companies through joint research projects. Besides, a great deal of our basic research is financed through the participation in public funded projects, both, at national and international level. 

Project description:

Industry 4.0 is currently seen as one of the contexts in which a new generation of wireless communications will enable pervasive connectivity between machines and objects. This will be one of the enablers for a new leap in industrial automation. Industrial wireless communications create new opportunities for reliable automation even in areas of difficult reach, and play a central role for the availability of information in real-time.

The mobility of objects involved in the production as well as the necessary flexibility of the production itself require wireless communication systems. Here, it is where the 5G will create a new ecosystem of a massive number of machines wirelessly communicating to each other. In order to fully exploit the potentials offered by wireless communication for monitoring, control and automation applications, there is a further need for time-constrained communication strategies that provide bounded latency together with high reliability and energy efficiency.

This project will provide some answers in this new search, including architecture and protocol design for mobile and cloud/fog robotics systems, mobility management in such a continuous ultra-dense deployment, MAC layer considerations for the massive access to the shared network in a meshed manner, and physical implications. Throughout the project it will be investigated new mechanisms/techniques for the radio resource management in cloud/fog RAN environments in mixed architectures that consider cellular access with mesh capabilities whenever appropriate., with a special emphasis in system performance enhancement through the co-design of PHY, MAC and higher protocols. New strategies will be validated through emulation and experimentation, prototyping will have an important presence.
