Brief description of the institution:

The University of Jaén (UJA) is an EHEA medium-sized Spanish public university (some 16000 students and almost 1000 lecturers) that was established in 1993 and is organized into 6 main Schools/Faculties (Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Work, Faculty of Human Sciences, Faculty of Experimental Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences and two Schools of Engineering). In addition to its 124 research groups, the University of Jaén is proud of its 4 Advanced Research Centers (Earth Sciences, Energy and Environmental Sciences, Olive Oil Research and Development, and Computational Sciences) and of its Institute on Iberian Archaeology Research. Moreover, UJA is integrated into a university network recognized as Campus of International Excellence in the fields of Agrifood (CEIA3), Climate Change (CamBio) and Historical Heritage (PatrimoniUN10).

UJA permanently welcomes new foreign research proposals as part of a conscious effort to increase its international profile and widen both its knowledge and its horizons.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

We are a young group focused in research the saline stress in plants. Salinity is currently one of the most severe abiotic factors limiting agricultural production. The high rates of population growth and global warming are expected to further exacerbate the threat of salinity, especially in areas with a semi-arid climate as         in the Mediterranean region. Salinity affects plant performance through the development of osmotic stress and disruption of ion homeostasis, which in turn cause metabolic dysfunctions.

We have worked with salinity tolerant glycophyte species, no strict halophyte species, legumes, ornamentals and olive.

In the last years we have also started the study of biotic factors that reduce crop yield.

The University of Jaén has all necessary equipment to develop the project. We have central facilities for the use of highly cost equipment (http://www10.ujaen.es/conocenos/servicios-unidades/cict).

Project description:

Different genotypes of the same specie vary in their tolerance to salinity. This tolerance is genetically determined and influenced by biochemical, molecular, biological and physiological factors, eg cell compatibility and osmoprotective substances such as free amino acids and polyamines. On the other hand, adaptation mechanisms are also important and include maintenance of turgency due to osmotic adjustment, and tissue accumulation of proline and polyamines.

We final aim is the thorough understanding of the mechanisms conferring salt tolerance under the expected climatic change.
