Brief description of the institution:

The University of Jaén (UJA) is an EHEA medium-sized Spanish public university (some 16000 students and almost 1000 lecturers) that was established in 1993 and is organized into 6 main Schools/Faculties (Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Work, Faculty of Human Sciences, Faculty of Experimental Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences and two Schools of Engineering). In addition to its 124 research groups, the University of Jaén is proud of its 4 Advanced Research Centers (Earth Sciences, Energy and Environmental Sciences, Olive Oil Research and Development, and Computational Sciences) and of its Institute on Iberian Archaeology Research. Moreover, UJA is integrated into a university network recognized as Campus of International Excellence in the fields of Agrifood (CEIA3), Climate Change (CamBio) and Historical Heritage (PatrimoniUN10).

UJA permanently welcomes new foreign research proposals as part of a conscious effort to increase its international profile and widen both its knowledge and its horizons.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

The Department of Geology (http://www10.ujaen.es/conocenos/departamentos/geologia) is constituted by the next areas: Crystallography and Mineralogy, Pedology and Agriculture Chemistry, Stratigraphy, External Geodynamic and Internal Geodynamic. The compounds of these areas are locating in two centres, one in the Experimental Sciences Faculty (Las Lagunillas Campus from Jaén) and the High Polytechnic School from Linares (Scientific and Technological Campus from Linares). The research made in our Department is assembled according to four research groups, named as RNM200 “Basin Analysis and Environmental Geology”, RNM325 “Geological Processes and Resources”, RNM370 “Seismic Hazard and Recent Tectonic” and RNM374 “Earth Sciences and Geologic Engineering”. These research groups are made up by staff of Department and also by researchers of other departments of the University, as Chemistry, Physics, Mines Engineering, and from other Universities and research centres from national to international level (e.g. Granada University, Alicante University, Complutense de Madrid University, Universidade do Mihno, Universidade do Coimbra, Birstol University, Open University, Liverpool University, IACT-CSIC-Spain, ETH-Zurich,…).

The research made by these groups is varying, from topics related to sedimentary geochemistry to basin analysis, study of igneous and metamorphic rocks, mineralogy, groundwaters and their relation in the seismic development, active faults, degradation of soils and cultivable soils, geodiversity analysis.

Project description:

According to the great variety of research topics developed in the Department of Geology, it is difficult to stablish a specific and single research project for the entire Department. The interested researcher to develop their studies in our Department should indicate firstly which their research trend is and then, we could define more precisely which the research group more appropriate with this trend is.
