Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

The UPC-CSLab Communication and Sensing is a 2017 Maria de Maeztu Spanish Excellence research unit within the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). Its vision is based on the: excellence in education and teaching, competitive research at international level and close interaction with industry. The center ranks 24 on Telecom Engineering (3rd in Europe) and 39 on Remote Sensing on the 2017 Shanghai Global Rankings’s of Academic Subjects. Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers-Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering Subject ranks number 5 in Europe and 40 in the World.

Activities in the domain of engineering electromagnetics include computational electromagnetics, device and material characterization, circuits, sub-systems and complex system design, algorithms for data analysis in a frequency range that spans from the MHz to the optical range including the THz range of frequencies for applications in communications, medical and bio-sensing and remote sensing.

The unit is fully instrumented to perform measurements of materials, devices, and sub-systems in a wide frequency range, including microwaves, mm-wave, terahertz and optics.  The unit manages its own cloud computing based on a cluster of multi node blade servers interconnected to a distributed data storage system, with a present capacity of 100TB, through a 10Gigabit Ethernet network. In this cluster simulations with proprietary software as well as commercial software packages are run. Available software packages are CST-Studio, HFSS, ADS, Matlab, Comsol, Feko, ENVI-IDL and others.

Project description:

Recent scientific and technological advancements are producing an explosion of communication and sensing possibilities that will drastically change the way we interact with our physical environment. It is forecasted that similarly to Moores law the number of connected devices will double every two years, reaching the number of 50 Bn in 2020. Moreover, an even more intense and disruptive change in their nature and distribution is foreseeable. Our environment has a scattered distribution, meaning that we perceive multiple signals of different nature and origin, either as natural sources or as a response to our interrogation. Therefore, it is pertinent to target the interaction with the environment with a "scattered network distribution" able to interact with our multi-scale world in a more natural, efficient, mobile and low-cost way.

During his/her fellowship the Marie Curie candidate will join us to collaborate in our efforts to develop this new envoronment in one of the following main areas:

 • AEC Advanced Electromagnetic Computing for Advanced Communication and Sensing

• MPAT. Microwave to Photonic Technologies for Advanced Communications and Sensing 

• EMPSI. Electromagnetic Microwave to Photonic Sensing and Imaging Systems

.• ECS. Electromagnetic Cognitive Sensing and Data Fusion for Advanced Communications and Sensing

• RSSD. Remote Sensing Systems with Single and Distributed Small Sensors.
