Brief description of the institution:

The Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM) is an institute of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC) (Spanish National Research Council) founded in December 1986, that belongs to the Area of Science and Technology of Materials, one of the eight Areas in which the CSIC divides its research activities.
Our mission is to create new fundamental and applied knowledge in materials of high technological impact, their processing and their transfer to the productive sectors at local, national and European scales (the true value of materials is in their use), the training of new professionals, and the dissemination of the scientific knowledge.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

CSIC is the largest research public institution in Spain and the third in Europe.It has dilated experience in both participating and managing R&D projects and training of research personnel. During the first calls of H2020, CSIC has obtained 186 projects with a total financial contribution of 78M€.

The ESISNA group has been working in the field of Surface Science for more than 20 years, studying the interaction and reaction of organic/inorganic adsorbates with all kind of surfaces, either metallic or semiconductors. More recently, ESISNA has positioned as a world reference in the field of On-surface Synthesis focused in the adaptation of traditional wet chemistry reactions to surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions for the realization of atomically precise nanostructures. This research is carried out following a multitechnique approach which combines both experiments and theory.

The ESISNA group counts with state-of-the-art UHV equipment such as scanning tunnelling microscopes (STM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), x-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (XPS/UPS), among others, and is frequent user of synchrotron radiation facilities. This multitechnique approach allows ESISNA to tackle complex scientific problems reaching a top level of characterization and understanding.

Project description:

The research to be developed at ESISNA group is embedded in the emerging and multidisciplinary field of On-surface Synthesis. The project will be oriented toward the on-surface bottom-up fabrication and characterization of atomically precise, low-dimensional organic nanostructures with new functionalities and properties and high scientific and technological interest. These nanostructures will be directly grown on surfaces under UHV conditions through the covalent coupling of tailored precursor monomers. The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of such nanostructures will be studied, paying special attention to the physicochemical mechanisms operating at the atomic level. To reach a complete understanding, a multitechnique approach will be used, based on the combination of complementary characterization techniques such as STM, STS, LEED, IRRAS, UPS, XPS and NEXAFS, among others. All this experimental results will be complemented with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations.

This project will allow the fellow training in an emerging, multidisciplinary and novel research field with high potential scientific and technological interest, giving him/her a broad vision of the field and increasing his/her awareness on future strategic research fields.
