Brief description of the institution:

The CSIC (Spanish National Research Council) is Spain’s largest public research institution, and ranks third among Europe’s largest research organization. The CSIC is attached to the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness through the State Secretariat for Research, Development and Innovation, and plays a key role in scientific and technological policy in Spain and worldwide. According to its Statute (Article 4), CSIC has 4 main missions: a) To foster multidisciplinary scientific and technological research b) Knowledge transfer to industry and society c) Education and training of scientific and technical staff d) Creation of Technology Based Companies. CSIC has 10.940 employees, including 3.764 researchers. CSIC has 123 Institutes spread across the country and covering different areas of Science and Technology. 70 of them are fully-owned institutes and 53 are Joint Research Units in partnership with other Spanish universities or research institutions. CSIC has also a delegation in Brussels. CSIC supports research and training across a wide range of knowledge, from the most basic or fundamental aspects of science to the most complex technological developments. As the third largest research organization in Europe, CSIC carries out research in all fields of knowledge, throughout its 123 Institutes distributed in eight areas: Humanities and Social Sciences, Biology and Biomedicine, Natural Resources, Agricultural Sciences, Physical Science and Technologies, Materials Science and Technology, Food Science and Technology, Chemical Science and Technology.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

The Doñana Biological Station is a public Research Institute belonging to the Spanish Council for Scientific Research CSIC in the area of Natural Resources, created in 1964 and located in Seville (Spain). Focusing on ecology, evolutionary biology and conservation of biodiversity, it is considered one of the most important research centres in Europe and captures an important and increasing fraction of the research budget for conservation biology in Spain. EBD-CSIC fundamental mission is to carry out multidisciplinary research of the highest standard directed to understanding, from an evolutionary viewpoint, the way in which biodiversity is generated, maintained and how it deteriorates, as well as the consequences of its loss and the possibilities of its conservation and restoration. An inseparable derivative is also to promote the transfer of this knowledge to society. The Institute is formed by its main building in Seville and two field stations, the Doñana Biological Reserve ICTS (Doñana Natural Space, Almonte, Huelva) and the Roblehondo Field Station (Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natural Park, Jaen).

Project description:

We are interested in hosting postdocs in Wetland Ecology research line. EBD-CSIC uses many different approaches within freshwater systems, with much research carried out in the Doñana World Heritage Site, as well as broader geographical scales including worldwide analyses of ecosystem functioning. We play a leading role in the study of water bird mediated connectivity in aquatic systems and their importance for plant and invertebrates dispersion, the spread of biological invasions or the effects of contamination. Long term trends in different populations or the impact of agricultural practices on their conservation were analysed using long term monitoring data from ICTS-RBD. We have developed remote sensing tools for habitat classification and monitoring. EBD-CSIC has gained international expertise in the monitoring of vector-borne diseases, assessing the potential for disease transmission from wildlife to humans and the importance of environmental factors on disease spread.
