Brief description of the institution:

The University of Jaén (UJA) is an EHEA medium-sized Spanish public university (some 16000 students and almost 1000 lecturers) that was established in 1993 and is organized into 6 main Schools/Faculties (Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Work, Faculty of Human Sciences, Faculty of Experimental Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences and two Schools of Engineering). In addition to its 124 research groups, the University of Jaén is proud of its 4 Advanced Research Centers (Earth Sciences, Energy and Environmental Sciences, Olive Oil Research and Development, and Computational Sciences) and of its Institute on Iberian Archaeology Research. Moreover, UJA is integrated into a university network recognized as Campus of International Excellence in the fields of Agrifood (CEIA3), Climate Change (CamBio) and Historical Heritage (PatrimoniUN10).

UJA permanently welcomes new foreign research proposals as part of a conscious effort to increase its international profile and widen both its knowledge and its horizons.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

The GIIC (Grupo de Investigación en Ingeniería Cartográfica) is a young research group focusing mostly on research in spatial data (design, data generalization, data fusion, quality control and geoservices). We applied statistics, design of experiments and simulation of data and processes. We are equipped with a new lab with many software licenses (e.g ArcGIS, FME, etc.), with access to topographic and geodetic survey devices (e.g. GNSS, TLS, UAV, etc.). These facilities are located at the "Escuela Politécnica Superior de Jaén" of the UJA.

Our research group has a great expertise in the data quality domain and is very recognized in all Latin America (Ecuador, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, etc.). Since 2008 we also had been organizing a very successful master on Quality Control and Management of Geographic Information.

There is a senior and a junior staff, and also we have ph-students from abroad (Brazil, Portugal, etc.) and postdoc visitants.

We have participated in several competitive research projects from the Spanish Government and from the Regional Government. Now we want to reinforce our international position and our links with other European institutions.

Nowadays, our group’s main effort of research is devoted to producing new methods and tools for spatial data quality assessment and control.

Project description:

Geographic Information (GI), or spatial data, supports decision making in several fields as: Climate change, crop forecasting, forest fires, national defense, civil protection or spatial planning.

The quality of the GI is essential to ensure that decisions based on it are technically the best. For that reason, it is included within the data policies of European Environmental Agency and of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (USA). A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is a specific kind of spatial data with a lot of possible direct uses (e.g. slope and aspect calculations, viewshed/watershed determination) and other derived uses (e.g. soil erosion, surface hydrology, etc.).

Traditional quality assessment and control of DEMs is very simple and does not differ from other kind of spatial data. Even the newest proposals go in this direction (e.g. last standard from the ASPRS).

We believe that quality should be understandable for the users, and this means that quality must be conceptualized and developed in a fashion more close to users, and to specific use cases. To that end we consider a project consisting in: first the determination of a set of several quality aspects of DEM data in relation to specific use cases, second perform the selection of aspects and metrics, third the tuning of measures for the new quality indexes. All these phases must be resolved taking into account the “voice of the users”, and performing simulations with data and models.
