Department / Institute / Centre

  • Name: CONSEJO SUPERIOR DE INVESTIGACIONES CIENTÍFICAS - INSTITUTO DE INVESTIGACIONES MARINAS
  • Address: Eduardo Cabello, 6 - 36208 VIGO
  • Province: Pontevedra

Research Area

  • Environmental Sciences and Geology (ENV)

Brief description of the institution:

The Institute of Marine Research (IIM) belonging to the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) was established in 1951 as a coastal laboratory under the Institute of Fisheries Research of Barcelona, from it was segregated in 1978. At that time, and as a independent center, was renamed Fisheries Research Institute, adopting its current name in 1986.
The Marine Research Institute works under three CSIC Scientific-Technical Areas: Natural Resources, Agricultural and Food Science and Technology, being structured into four departments: Oceanography, Marine Resources and Ecology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture, and Food Technology.
The goals of the Institute are:
Develop an integrated and multidisciplinary marine science research to advance the global understanding of marine ecosystems and the scientific and technological state of the productive sectors related.
Train research personnel and skilled technician, assisting their transfer to other entities (industry, administration, education).
Contribute to the teaching of science and its dissemination to society.
Scientific knowledge and technology transfer to industry.
The Institute has core facilities for several analytical procedures. Among others we have facilities molecular biology, microbiology, TEM and confocal microscopy, computing and has Access to the extense catalogue of research journal from several well know publishers such as Wiley and Sons, Thomson Reuters and Elsevier trough the CSIC library system.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe. Its main objective is to develop and promote research that will help bring about scientific and technological progress, and it is prepared to collaborate with Spanish and foreign entities in order to achieve this aim. It has a staff of more than 13,000 employees, among these about 3,300 are permanent researchers and about 4,300 are pre- and post-doctoral researchers. The CSIC has 70 fully own institutes or centres distributed throughout Spain. In addition, it has 53 Joint Research Units with universities or other research institutions. There is also a delegation in Brussels and Rome.

CSIC has considerable experience in both participating and managing R&D projects and training of research personnel. Under the 7th Framework Programme CSIC has signed approximately 700 actions (including 97 coordinated by CSIC and 47 ERC projects). Funding wise, CSIC is listed the 1st organisation in Spain and the 5th in Europe in the 7th Framework Programme, with a total FP7 contribution of over 260 million euros. During the first calls of H2020, CSIC has had an intense participation in all programmes. It has been remarkable the participation in certain calls, such as ERC and Marie Curie, as well as in ICT, NMBP and Societal Challenges. In March 2015 CSIC has obtained 90 projects with a total financial contribution of 40 million euros.

Project description:

The research group of Fiz F. Pérez has a long experience in marine carbon cycle (open and coastal water) and in water mass characterization. The group has successful research in the impact of the anthropogenic CO2 in the marine CO2 system and in Ocean Acidification. A long series of articles in Q1 journals (Progress in Oceanography, Biogeoscience), AGU journals s, PNAS and Nature has been published during the last decade in relation to the anthropogenic CO2 storage, water mass transport and acidification in the ocean, in particular, in the South and North Atlantic. The coupling of the water mass transport changes and the anthropogenic marine CO2 system has been deeply addressed. Recently we published our achievement in a letter in Nature has shown the shoaling of the Aragonitic horizon in the North Atlantic which would impact in the communities of cold-water corals.  The group is developing a lab marine aquatic system with the control of the CO2-system and physical variables to study the impact over the biota of future climatic scenarios. We have participated in several EU projects (CARBOOCEAN, and CARBOCHANGE). The CSIC owns several research vessels and among them the R/V Sarmiento de Gamboa, involved in several repetitions of GO-SHIP lines. Fiz F. Perez is Research Professor. He participated in several National Committees and has been Chairman of CLIVAR Spain (2004-2007). He is an expert in CO2 system, water masses and carbon dynamics in upwelling ecosystems. He has participated in 54 projects (15 as PI). He published 163 papers (153 in SCI and H-index=38), has been supervisor of 19 PhD students and has participated in 27 scientific cruises (12 international and 3 as Chief scientist) along the Atlantic and Antarctic Ocean.
