Brief description of the institution:

The Institute of Biomedicine of Seville is a high quality joint research centre established in 2006 as a health research, being participated by the Andalusian Regional Ministry for Innovation, Science and Enterprise, the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Health, the Spanish National Research Council, the University of Seville and the Andalusian Health Service, having these entities a common interest in fostering collaboration and cooperation and in joining efforts in the field of health research. It is one of the 18 health research institutes accredited in Spain by the Spanish Research Council (Instituto de Salud Carlos III).
IBIS is a multidisciplinary biomedical research centre, with the aim to undertake high quality and competitive research at international level on the most prevalent diseases. IBIS is based on fundamental research at the molecular and cellular level with a view to promote the rapid transfer of knowledge to the clinical setting, at the same time improving the quality of clinical and epidemiological research. It is focused on most prevalent diseases and organized in 4 research areas: Neurosciences, Cardiovascular & Respiratory pathology, Oncohematology & Genetics, and Infectious diseases & Immune system.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

The Coloproctology Research Group is composed of surgeons, gastroenterologists, pathologists, chemists, biologists and engineers. Diseases of the colon, rectum and anus are an important health problem, which is why the research group is constituted as a reference pillar where the different clinical disciplines compete for both preclinical and clinical studies with a particularly translational vision. In this scenario tissue engineering has a relevant role in our group.

The first two lines of research of this group are the search of non-invasive and effective strategies for the treatment of anal fistulas both in normal and Crohn's patients, as well as in the design and construction exvivo in a bioreactor, of a functional biosphere from scaffolding, stem cells and growth factors. The ultimate goal is it can be used in patients who are born without a year or lose it as a result of a trauma or amputation due to cancer.

At the preclinical level we have advanced in the design and adaptation of cultivation methods, three-dimensional scaffolding and the design of a bioreactor and a stove for movement cultivation for the creation of biospheres.

The group has a solid experience in the field of interrelations between microstructure, rheology and stability of complex systems formulated from of several components that provide specific functionality for their use in a wide variety of applications.

Project description:

The selected candidate will be involved in the search of non-invasive and effective strategies for the treatment of anal fistulas both in normal and Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's or Hirschprung’s disease and Behçet’s patients. They will develop analysis of three-dimensional anorectal ultrasound images, pelvic floor and faecal incontinence evaluation. They will be involved in the validation of new scoring systems, clinical trials with different treatments and data support computational models.
