Brief description of the institution:

Universidad San Pablo CEU (USP-CEU) is a young university founded in Madrid in 1993. USP-CEU is committed to academic and professional excellence, aiming for the best quality in education, research and internationalization. Being a specialized University, USP-CEU structures its studies on three main fields of knowledge: Health and life sciences; Social sciences and humanities, and Architecture and Engineering.

USP-CEU facilities include 8 Research Centers, 43 Research Groups and 11 Core Research Facilities which sum an area of 3400 m2 devoted to research. Over the past 5 years, University:

• Has been granted 60 competitive research projects.

• Achieves collaborations with Industry meaning 54% of R&D funding.

• Participates in four H2020 projects, including two MSCA-IF grants and a MSCA-COFUND program. University leads five Erasmus + actions.

USP-CEU is looking for a highly motivated researcher to apply for MSCA-IF-2018 calls. The selected candidate will have the support of the Office of International Research Programs to prepare and submit the proposal. The involvement of the fellow in the proposal writing process will provide many opportunities to tailor the proposal to her / his research interests. If the MSCA-IF is granted, the position may start during the second quarter of 2019 until September 2020, and it will have a duration of 2 years.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

Prof. del Águila, head of Parasitology and Immunology Research Group, has a wide experience in parasitology diagnosis, animal model experimental infections, immunology and molecular biology. She has 90 publications in the most prestigious international journals and is inventor of four granted patents.

She has worked in ultrastructural analysis and antigenic profile of microsporidia after establishing their own strains isolated from patients. She diagnosed the first microsporidiosis cases in Spain including the second case of lung dissemination of Enterocytozoon bieneusi worldwide. She had also participated in epidemiology studies with HIV-positive children in Spain and in Nigeria.

The group has also studied microspiridia presence in wild and domestic animals and in water from north and central Spain, as well as the intra-species variability of these parasites and its biological implications as a risk factor for autoimmune diseases and cancer.

In addition they work in immunobiology and pathology of Toxocara canis; Cryptosporidium’s epidemiology and in new treatments (one patented).

The group has also been awarded 4 grants focused on “Water as a risk factor in the acquisition of emerging pathogens” that included molecular the epidemiology of Cryptosporidium, microsporidia, free lining amoebae and Legionella.

The newest research line is focused in protein directed evolution in polymerases from intracellular pathogens.

Most relevant results in the last 5 years: 27 Articles in international journals; 10 PhD thesis; 8 Competitive Research projects.

Project description:

Different projects could be developed:

1. Evaluation of the high presence of Acanthamoeba and other protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium, etc.,.) in waters for human use. Study and characterization of the vectorial role of Acanthamoeba (Legionella, Pseudomonas, etc.,.) in the acquisition of emergent pathologies.

2. Microsporidia and other protozoa as a risk factor in the pathology of autoimmune disease (Crohn Disease, and Others…) and Colorectal cancer.

3. New diagnostic tool based in Aptamer Development.

4. Pneumonia and autoimmunity due to nosocomial and community acquired infections: Acanthamoeba as a reservoir of Mimivirus, Adenovirus and Legionella: (Research Line in development).

5. Molecular Diagnosis amoebic keratitis and encephalitis.

6. Molecular Diagnosis of Microsporidiosis.

7. Development of monoclonal antibodies for diagnosis of Microsporidiosis in the Spanish Fauna (Lynx, pigeon, bees...).

8. Evasion Mechanism of Inmune System by Microsporidia, Acanthamoeba, Legionella….

9. Modification of antibodies and proteins with biotechnology application from parasites by technology of Protein Directed Evolution.
