Brief description of the institution:

The CIB is a multidisciplinary research institution, at the forefront of biological research. Initially focusing on biology and biomedicine, sensu stricto, today the CIB is covering a broad spectrum of knowledge and research, including agricultural sciences, chemistry or biophysics.
Using biology as a common denominator, the CIB mission is manifold, but mainly fostering education, research and technology transfer to society. The scientific focus of the institute is mainly driven by some of the major societal challenges as defined by European citizens: health (medicine), food security (agriculture) & environment (ecology).
The CIB is a unique meeting place for scientists covering a broad spectrum of expertise, such as molecular and cellular biologists, geneticists, microbiologists, biophysics, biochemists, working at the heart of the largest university campus in Spain (Complutense University).
It is one of the more emblematic research institutes of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). With a track record of over 60 years, the CIB has been able to attract competitive funding at the local, national and international level to finance its research projects,

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

The Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas (CIB) is a multidisciplinary institute integrated by scientists working in cutting edge research in a complementary and collaborative manner. The Institute holds scientific facilities supervised by specialized personnel who make possible to employ varied techniques and equipment. The group of Posttranslational Modification of Proteins at CIB pursues a research line unveiling novel aspects of posttranslational modifications, involving both endogenous reactive species and mediators, and drugs. Posttranslational modification is an essential mechanism for diversification of protein structure and regulation of protein function. This line has led to pioneer works in the identification of novel types of modification by electrophilic lipids and in the structural and functional characterization of the protein targets. It has also unveiled the interplay between redox, electrophilic and drug-induced modifications, with consequences in cell pathophysiology and in the mechanisms of adverse reactions to drugs. The group is integrated in European and National networks and actively collaborates with leading scientists in these fields. It is formed by two staff scientists, together with several predoctoral fellows and undergraduate or master students, and belongs to the Department of Structural and Chemical Biology, which gathers experts in protein structure and interactions and provides a stimulating research environment.

Project description:

The proposed work addresses novel aspects of the function of cytoskeletal proteins depending on residues which behave as “sensors” for diverse types of stress through posttranslational modification. The work in progress involves studies ranging from molecular and cellular biology to structural biology, biophysics and pathophysiology in models of genetic disease. The project will address the most innovative aspects derived from recent findings of the group:
