Brief description of the institution:

Established by the University of Deusto with a focus in applied and action research, Deusto Foundation acts as a link between basic research and academia, and society at large. Its two prestigious research centres, the Basque Institute of Competitiveness - Orkestra, and DeustoTech, have a long trajectory of collaboration with public and private companies, government agencies, industry and SMEs and other stakeholders.
DeustoTech is a research intensive centre closely linked to the Faculty of Engineering in the campus of Bilbao. Its cutting-edge research is recognised worldwide in areas such as Knowledge Mining, Context Aware ICT, Media and Human Technologies, and Communication and Embedded Systems amongst others. DeustoTech researchers benefit from over 2,000 m2 of newly renovated multimillion state-of-the-art facilities. The centre currently has 16 ongoing projects, including several international consortia projects and a prestigious ERC advanced grant. To date it has attracted substantial external funding and has concluded over 400 projects since its inception.
Orkestra, located at the University’s San Sebastian campus, has become an international model in the analysis of regional competitiveness in a global environment. Its main framework is the study of competitiveness and regional development to contribute to the improvement of regional competitiveness, with a solid expertise in Smart Specialisation Strategies (RIS3). Orkestra boosts socio-economic impact through an innovative participatory methodology promoting multi-sectoral stakeholder engagement.

DeustoTech-Societal Challenges undertakes basic and applied research on the topics of advanced Human-Environment Interaction, Middleware supported by Semantic Web technologies for Wireless Embedded Devices, Applied Artificial Intelligence for User Behaviour Learning and Environment Reaction, Physical World Persuasive Object Instrumentation and Internet Computing: Web 3.0 and beyond, Ubiquitous Web, Linked and Big Data.
Our main research areas are:
• Context-aware Mobile Computing for Enhanced User-Environment Interaction
• Semantic Middleware for Embedded Wirelessly-connected Devices
• Smart Environments of Augmented Internet-connected Persuasive Objects
• Ambient Assisted Environments (homes, cities): adaptive accessible services aware of user activities
• Future Internet: Internet of Services, Internet of Things and Semantic Web
• ICTs applied to Societal Challenges: ageing, open government and sustainability

Project description:

Interested researchers will be involved in the current Horizon 2020 projects dealing with the following challenges:
- User-generated data processing supported by Human Intelligence (SIMPATICO H2020, https://simpatico.morelab.deusto.es/)
- Holistic Management of Big Datests (EDI H2020, https://edincubator.eu/)
- FoodBar: Data, Cognitive and social intelligence for competitiveness of miniatura food sector, IBM backed project
