Brief description of the institution:

Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) is a broad-scoped university -the largest in Spain- in which almost every field of knowledge is envisaged. Due to this broad-scoped nature UCM is able to offer 170 official degrees out of which 65 correspond to bachelor degrees and 105 to master degrees. Regarding research activities they are developed through its 21 faculties, 5 university schools, 9 associated centers, 40 university research institutes, 8 schools for professional specialization, 4 university hospitals, and 17 research assistance centers. All these centers host nowadays almost 600 research groups.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) is the leading institution of the MEGARA project, the new facility instrument of the Spanish 10.4m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC hereafter).MEGARA offers two different observing modes to the community, the Large Compact Bundle (LCB) mode, an Integral Field Unit (IFU) covering 12.5” x 11.3” on the sky with a spaxel size of 0.62” and a Multi-Object Spectroscopy (MOS) mode that allows observing 100 objects in a region of 3.5’ x 3.5’ around the LCB IFU. Eight of these bundles is devoted to the determination of the sky during the observation with the LCB. Each of the MEGARA MOS positioners can place a mini-bundle of 7 fibers (0.62”/fiber) covering an area of 1.6" on the sky. Both the LCB IFU and MOS capabilities of MEGARA provide intermediate-to-high spectral resolutions (R~6000, 12000 and 20000).The MEGARA consortium responsible for the design and construction of the instrument is composed by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM, Spain) where the MEGARA PI (Armando Gil de Paz) is located, the Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica (INAOE, Mexico), the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC, Spain), and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM, Spain).The PI and the Science Group at UCM belong to GUAIX (see, the UCM Group of Extragalactic Astrophysics and Astronomical Instrumentation, which is part of the UCM "Departamento de Física de la Tierra y Astrofísica".

Project description:

The project proposed is focused on the exploitation of the Guaranteed Time of the group on the MEGARA instrument, which will start regular observations as a facility instrument in GTC on July 1st, 2018.

The characteristics of the MEGARA instrument are driven by the scientific requirements set by out MEGARA Science Team, a group of over 50 astronomers from different institutions mainly from the GTC partner countries. Therefore, MEGARA is best optimized for carrying out that science although, as a versatile facility instrument, can be easily pursue many other research projects in Astronomy.

Thus, the scientific interests of the MEGARA Science Team can be grouped in two categories:

  • The study of Galactic and extragalactic nebulae (i.e. nearby galaxies).
  • The study of (or close to) point sources with intermediate-to-high surface densities.

Among the former our interests include the study of nearby galaxies, Planetary Nebulae, and high-redshift diffuse Lyman-alpha emission and among the latter Galactic open stellar clusters, stellar populations in Local Group galaxies, Globular-Cluster systems in nearby galaxies, intermediate-redshift dwarf and starburst galaxies, and high-redshift galaxy clusters are the main subject of our planned research activities with MEGARA.

 The fellow is invited to be responsible for the coordination of the scientific exploitation of the UCM Guaranteed Time at GTC obtained as a payment for its in-kind contribution for the MEGARA design and construction. He/She is encouraged to carry out its own science both as part of the exploitation phase of MEGARA and also in other facilities to which the UCM has access, such as any of the telescopes at the La Palma, Calar Alto and ESO observatories.
