Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

Our research group at the University of Jaén (Social Challenges within Complex Societies; ref. SEJ-311) has carried out a variety of research projects on sociological aspects of current societies regarding diverse aspects around sociability and social cohesion. Our focus is on social problems associated with new patterns of inter-personal and inter-group relationships that are 1) engaged in and 2) influencing on the settings of labor markets, the patterns of cohabitation and the changes in basic provisions of Welfare States. Research initiatives stressing socio-demographic aspects of those processes in Southern European countries are especially welcomed to be hosted.

Project description:

At present we have a 4yr research project (running from 2016 to the end of 2019 and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation) focused on the sociological aspects around the rise of one-person households in Spain: “Profiles, environments and identities of future sociability: geo-sociology of one-person households in Spain” (ref. CSO2015-67066-R). The design and objectives of the project fit both quantitative and qualitative skills/expertise of potential candidates from the Marie S. Curie Fellowship Programme.

Candidates may opt for either contributing to the development and attainment of one or several specific objectives.

Three analytical approaches will be developed, namely focused on sociodemographic profiles, residential environments and biographic trajectories.

The following specific objectives are established for this project:

1.  To determine sociological profiles of one-person households in Spain by using some key sociodemographic variables: age, sex, educational attainment, marital status and activity status.

2.  To characterize the environments where one-person households socialize primarily (housing and residential environment).

3.  To establish spatial patterns of one-person households at three levels: across provinces, across municipalities and within municipalities.

4.  To examine motivations and expectations deriving in solo living by analyzing biographic trajectories and as a function of the abovementioned contextual factors.
