Brief description of the institution:

The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) is a public university founded in 1989. Its main goal is to provide specialised training in Law and Social Sciences and Engineering, as well as to become a prime European research centre. In addition, the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid pursues the creation of an innovative university and seek to offer a University model based on a quality-oriented philosophy. In this sense, modern, flexible and multidisciplinary curricula have been designed trying to suit the scientific and technological demand of the Society. The university is located in the southern metropolitan area of Madrid and consists of three centres: the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities, Communication and Library Science and the School of Engineering.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

The Joint Interdisciplinary Unit for Behavior and Social Complexity (UMICCS, from its name in Spanish) is a multidisciplinary research group composed by researchers from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (http://www.uc3m.es), Universitat de València (http://www.uv.es) and Universidad de Zaragoza (http://www.unizar.es) to promote cooperation in the field of behavioural studies and social complexity.

 Thus, UC3M, through the Interdisciplinary Group of Complex Socio-Technological Systems (GISC), (coordinated by Professor Angel Sánchez), UNIZAR, through the group Systems and Complex Networks (COSNET), (coordinated by Professor Yamir Moreno) and UV, through the Research Group on Strategic and Experimental Behaviour of the ERI Economic and Social Behaviour (ERI-CES), (coordinated by professor Penelope Hernandez),  develop complementary research in the fields of:

  • Computational and Behavioural Social Science
  • Experimental Economics
  • Complex Systems
  • Networks

The main research areas are focused on the following:

  • Analysis of large-scale socio-economic networks and social big data
  • Identification of economic and social nature patterns of human behaviour
  • Impact analysis on innovation strategies within complex environments
  • Modeling and simulation of the structure of society in behavioural experimental economics laboratory
  • Forecast the development of great social challenges (e.g., climate change, robotisation)
  • Detect the emergence of social norms.

Project description:

The project involves the creation and development of a citizen science lab at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid involving students from the Polytechnic School which would serve as human sensors. Students would download an application that would monitor their activity through their Smartphone and would also send them invitations to participate in relevant experiments. The idea behind this lab is to use the data to understand better the structure and evolution of social networks as well as to involve the students in the research, giving them the opportunity to both develop their own ideas about how to learn from the data and also to learn about their own behavior. In such context issues ranging from information diffusion to the emergence of social norms could be analyzed in detail thus leading to data- and mechanism- driven models of social structures and behavior. Other research questions could also be addressed within this lab that touch upon the relation of behavior, social signatures and mental health.
