The University of Jaén (UJA) is an EHEA medium-sized Spanish public university (some 16000 students and almost 1000 lecturers) that was established in 1993 and is organized into 6 main Schools/Faculties (Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Work, Faculty of Human Sciences, Faculty of Experimental Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences and two Schools of Engineering). In addition to its 124 research groups, the University of Jaén is proud of its 4 Advanced Research Centers (Earth Sciences, Energy and Environmental Sciences, Olive Oil Research and Development, and Computational Sciences) and of its Institute on Iberian Archaeology Research. Moreover, UJA is integrated into a university network recognized as Campus of International Excellence in the fields of Agrifood (CEIA3), Climate Change (CamBio) and Historical Heritage (PatrimoniUN10).

UJA permanently welcomes new foreign research proposals as part of a conscious effort to increase its international profile and widen both its knowledge and its horizons.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

HUM458 “Egyptology and Papyrology” is constituted by scholars related to the Humanities, especially to those areas related with the Past: Literary Documents, Art and History. The philological studies are specialized in Pharaonic, Aramaic, Greek, Latin and Coptic scripts. These studies are completed by a fieldwork project carried out in the archaeological site of Qubbet el-Hawa (Aswan, Egypt) since 2008. This archaeological site is one of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt, not only for the great quantity of biographic inscriptions dated to the end of the third and the beginning of the second millennia BC, but also due to the presence of a Medieval Monastery and some Islamic buildings devoted to Modern Sheikhs. The importance of the archaeological site together with the significant scientific results produced by the team have facilitated that Spanish Ministry of Science had funded the project since 2010.

This fieldwork project focuses not only in the documentation, conservation and interpretation of the aforementioned archaeological site. One of the major areas of study carried out by the present research group has also begun the translation for the first time into Spanish of the valuable local written sources from the Pharaonic times to the end of the Antiquity, including the Coptic texts. In this sense, the major sources for understanding the regional context come from the island of Elephantine and also from ancient Aswan and the First Cataract Area.

Project description:

The necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa and most of the archaeological material found in it has just been described, but not deeply studied. Among the re-analyses to be done, it would be useful a research about the women burials during the third and second millennia BC. In this sense, it is necessary to understand where they interred and the grave goods that accompanied them to the Netherworld. In order to understand the role of the woman in the society, we should try to establish social markers in the funerary world. Finally, a comparison with other contemporary necropoleis should complete the project.
