UJA permanently welcomes new foreign research proposals as part of a conscious effort to increase its international profile and widen both its knowledge and its horizons.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group (including URL if applicable):

University Research Institute for Iberian Archaeology (IAI) of the University of Jaén (Spain) was founded in 2012 as a transformation of the former Andalusian Centre for Iberian Archaeology. It is a multidisciplinary Institute integrating researchers from different field of knowledge: Archaeology, Prehistory, Medieval History, Chemistry, Information and Communication Technologies. Its objectives and specific aims are:

1.-Archaeology of the Iberians: For deeper knowledge of the history of Spain and Andalusia. 2.-Historiography: For further development of the Andalusian and Spanish identity.

3.-Landscape Archaeology: For better methodology in archaeology. Emphasis is to be placed on the development of strategies for reconstruction of palaeolandscape and its anthropic transformation based on carpological and anthracological analysis and new technologies for archaeological surveys.

4- Battlefield archaeology/conflicto archaeology: to understand the meaning of the war at Iberian times and paying special attention to methodology to research battlefields.

5- Analysis of activity areas using physical-chemical analysis.

6.-Management of Archaeological Heritage: For protection, research, preservation and dissemination strategies. These strategies must ensure knowledge transfer to the society of Andalusia.

7-Gendar archaeology: to understand the role play by women in the society of the Iberians.

Project description:

The IAI integrates two laboratories:

Laboratory of physical-chemical analysis: research of decorations and contents in ceramics vessels using MRS, EDXRF, XRD, GC-MS and HPLC-MS

Laboratory of palaeoenviromental analysis: analysis of seeds and charcoal The IAI has been involved in several types of European projects:

  • CARARE (2010-2013 ICT-PSP Programme) for the provision of cultural 3D content to Europeana
  • 3D-ICONS (2012-2015 ICT-PSP Programme) for the digitization of the most relevant European monuments and the ingestion of 3D contents to Europeana.
  • CEMEC, Connecting European Medieval European Collections (Creative Europe Programme, 2015-1143/001-001) for development of a transnational exhibition using ICT (2015-2019).

At the same time IAI was involved with the Technology Research Program for Evaluation and Preservation of Cultural Heritage (CSD2007-00058. Consolider-Ingenio 2010 Programme, 2008-2014), a network of 16 Universities, CSIC and Research Centres to set the scientific bases for an integral study of Cultural Heritage. In 2011 IAI was also integrated in the network Technoheritage (2011-2014), a network focus on the science and technology for Cultural Heritage. It was made up of 66 partners from CSIC, Universities, research centres, museums, foundations and companies.
